Pensacola got its name from the Native American Panzacola tribe who inhabited the area before the first European colony. Our great city has been archaeologically identified as the first multi-year European colonial settlement in the United States. Known as the "City of Five Flags," the Spanish, French, British, Confederate, and American flags have all flown over Pensacola in the last 500 years.
Pensacola was established in 1559 by Spanish Conquistador Don Tristan de Luna who led 1,500 Spanish settlers to create North America’s first European colony. The Luna settlement inhabited Pensacola from 1559 to 1561. A month after they arrived, Pensacola was struck by a devastating hurricane leaving the colony in desperation and to eventually leave the area.
Originally named George Street after King George, III, Palafox Street was built in 1763 by the British. When the Spanish regained control of Florida during the American Revolution in 1783, George Street was renamed to Palafox Street in honor of General José de Palafox y Melzi, a Spanish nobleman, General, military hero and the Duke of Zaragoza.
It's no surprise that Palafox earned its place on the list of the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, naming Palafox Street one of the "Great Streets in America." Here at Our Palafox, we take pride in this history and will continue to uphold the spirit of Palafox in all we do. Whether you're looking for restaurants downtown Pensacola with diverse, flavorful food, a divine Sunday Pensacola brunch or bars in Pensacola, come see us at Our Palafox where you not only get fresh, locally sourced food, you become immersed in the rich history of this incredible town.
When the Spanish regained control of Florida after the Treaty of Paris in 1783, what was once George Street was renamed to Palafox Street after Jose de Palafox y Melzi, the first Duke of Zaragoza. Palafox entered the guards at an early age and after attempting King Ferdinand's escape in 1808, he fled to Spain.
At the beginning of the Peninsular War, Palafox became Governor of Zaragoza and led the patriot movement in Aragon. After the French invaded neighboring provinces, Palafox declared war and built a small arms factory that armed 30,000 men. Despite this, Zaragoza was headed towards defeat until Palafox's brother forced 3,000 troops into the city. Renewed in the fight, they resolved to keep Zaragoza. The struggle lasted 9 more days (61 total) and resulted in the withdrawal of the French.
Palafox led his second siege in Zaragoza after Napoleon's army entered Spain, demolishing Spanish armies within a few weeks. After three months, the town ceded as a then ill Palafox fell into the hands of the French where he was kept prisoner at Vincennes until December 1813.
In June 1814, after confirmation to the office of Captain General of Aragon, Palafox withdrew and ceased his part in public affairs. He went on to command the royal guard of King Ferdinand from 1820 to 1823 but was stripped of all his honors for taking the side of the constitution. Palafox soon retired and received the title of Duke of Zaragoza in 1834. From 1836 until his death in Madrid in 1847, he took part in military and political affairs as captain-general of Aragon and senator.
In the 1800s, Pensacola's population continued to grow under Spanish control. The 1812 map "Bahia De Panzacola" clearly shows "Calle de Palafox" as a main thoroughfare to reach the center square. The Spanish lost their regained control to the United States in 1821 when Governor José Masot surrendered West Florida.
Palafox Street experienced significant growth after Florida became a U.S. territory. It was soon lined with businesses and services catering to the public. After the Civil War Era brought challenges, Palafox Street was a vital piece of Pensacola's recovery and remained the center business hub. By the turn of the century, a stable professional class emerged in the Blocks, rapidly increasing the commercial network on Palafox which only added to the vibrant bustle of the city.
Today, Palafox remains the heart of Pensacola, where culture, art, food, theater, music, community and history meet. Our Palafox was created to blend great food with our deep history while providing an experience based in hospitality.
