Pensacola and Palafox History continued...

Palafox Street in Pensacola, Florida, is one of the oldest streets in America, as well as Pensacola's most vibrant thoroughfare. Palafox's rich history reflects the various cultural, economic, and social changes that have shaped our great city over the centuries. Palafox is intricately intertwined with the development and growth of Pensacola itself.

By November 15, 1882, the Pensacola Streetcar Company, formed by Henry Pfeiffer and John Cosgrove, convinced the Pensacola City Council to pass an ordinance allowing steel track to be laid in the roadways. By 1884, the first streetcars were operational. In February of 1892, Palafox was paved and streetcar lines were placed by the reorganized Pensacola Streetcar Company, renamed the Pensacola Terminal Company. Boarding the streetcars costed five cents.

In 1897, electricity was brought to Pensacola and the trolleys' transition to electric began with a double set of tracks placed on Palafox Street. By 1906, only about a third of the distance covered ran on electricity and they were still using steam to cover the balance. The Stone & Webster organization took charge of the system and expanded the streetcars to operate on 20.39 miles of track with electricity as their sole power. In 1932, Streetcar service was discontinued and replaced by motor bus service. If you're looking for the places to eat in Pensacola that incorporate this great history, come visit Our Palafox!
